Hot summer weather is here. We ask everyone to take steps to stay safe and avoid heat-related illness.
During very hot weather, help and cooling supplies are available at The Gloria Center in The Dalles (2505 W. 7th St.) during normal business hours. The Gloria Center also opens as an emergency shelter when needed.
When the shelter opens, Mid-Columbia Community Action Council (MCCAC) notifies community partners and makes updates on social media and at mccac.com. You can find shelter details at mccac.com/severe-weather-resources or call (541) 298-5131.
Sherman County residents can also use The Gloria Center or call the Sherman County Office of Emergency Management at (541) 565-3100 and leave a message for help.
If you have the Oregon Health Plan, you can call (877) 875-4657 to ask about rides to a shelter.
Extreme heat causes more deaths than any other type of weather in the United States. Heat illness can happen to anyone, but it is preventable.
