North Central Public Health District will be closed on Friday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth. NCPHD will reopen for regular business hours on Monday, June 22.
Officially called Juneteenth National Independence Day, Juneteenth is a federal holiday celebrated yearly on June 19 to commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States.
While the Emancipation Proclamation of Jan. 1, 1863, officially freed slaves, word did not reach enslaved people in the westernmost Confederate state of Texas until June 19, 1865. This day of freedom became known as Juneteenth.
